A MYSTERY hound has chewed its way through 41 swings at a children's playground over the past 12 months - leaving Hyndburn Council taxpayers with a £2,000 bill.
Police, the dog warden and the council have failed to track down the troublesome pooch which has targeted Walmsley street playground, Rishton.
They are threatening to prosecute its owner.
Council chiefs are also becoming increasingly concerned for the safety of children who use the park.
They fear the dog could attack children playing on the swings.
The dog has repeatedly chewed off the rubber-coating from swings, exposing the metal underneath - which means that council workmen have had to replace the entire swing. The cost currently stands at £2,000.
A council spokesman said: "If anyone sees this dog chewing swings we would be grateful if they would report it so that we can send our dog warden to investigate."
Chairman of the leisure board councillor Brian Walmsley said: "My main concern, apart from the money, is the safety of the children who use the park.
"What if this dog goes to attack a swing with a child still on it? Obviously this dog owner is completely irresponsible."
Workmen were today putting up new swings.
