LESS well off parents could lose financial help to buy their children school uniforms.

Wigan Council education chiefs are set to axe a clothing allowance available for low income parents, claiming these families are now better off because of the Working Families Tax Credit.

If thr full council gives the go-ahead to the proposals, only families on income support will be able claim the allowances.

The move will cut the council's clothing allowance budget from £109,000 to £100,000 and the money will be used to meet increasing transport costs faced by the authority.

Axing discretionary awards will slash another £126,00 from the budget but education chiefs say students will not be hard hit because there are now alternative forms of funding available.

The cuts to fund growth in other areas were discussed at Wigan's Education Committee.
