A MOTHER'S vision to improve safety on the street where her daughter died is a step closer to reality after a cash pledge from Lancashire County Council.

The £12,300 towards implementing safety measures in the Trafford Street area, where little Hannah Chippendale was knocked down and killed last summer, is part of a range of projects backed by the county council in the Moor Park area.

How the money will be used in Trafford Street, which is used by motorists to avoid the congested Blackpool Road-Garstang Road junction, has yet to be decided by Preston Borough Council, who will also have to contribute to the cost. Hannah's mum, Carol, of Elmsley Street, has relentlessly campaigned for traffic calming measures since six-year-old Hannah's death and presented a 200-signature petition to the council before Christmas.

She said: "It is good news the county council has made funding available, but we now need to ensure the borough council does its bit."

Preston council is consulting residents to find out which traffic calming scheme they prefer: road closures and a reduced speed limit; or speed humps.

Moor Park Coun Frank De Molfetta said: "Public consultation is on-going and when we know the results, we will back the residents' decision."

Fellow councillor Mick Moulding added: "Two years of hard work is beginning to pay off."

More than £20,000 has been awarded for a speed bump scheme in the St Thomas' Road estate, while £10,000 had been awarded for a scheme in the Fulwood Park estate.
