DRIVERS have been warned to stop parking in front of dropped kerbs following complaints from local disabled people.

Police say traffic wardens are being deluged with grumbles from disabled people, who have had to struggle down a dropped kerb obstructed by a car.

Inspector Andrew Baxter, of Preston Police, said: "Drivers may not be aware that they are committing an offence of causing an unnecessary obstruction by parking their vehicles against dropped kerbs."

Police say anyone found to be parking in front of a dropped kerb can expect a £20 fixed penalty notice. In some cases, the car may even be removed.

Insp Baxter added: "Our traffic wardens will be paying special attention to the problem around the town, and a special mobile unit has been deployed to deal with it."

Problems can be reported to Preston's road safety unit on (01772) 209165.

There has been a shortage of traffic wardens in Leyland, after the town's two-strong patrol went off sick.

The situation was reported at a recent area committee meeting.
