MAYORS and mayoresses who had served Burnley for more than 20 years gathered at the town hall for a millennium get-together.

The reunion of civic leaders ranged from Coun Albert Pickup, mayor in 1978, to present-day incumbent Coun Eddie Fisk, who hosted the reception. There was an opportunity for commemorative photographs of the occasion, especially important because the traditional role of mayor could be swept away in the planned major shake-up of local government nationally.

Joining the civic "chain gang" at the get-together were former council chief officers, including Brian Whittle, chief executive for more than 20 years, and former borough treasurers Maurice Eddington and Norman Smith.

The current mayor, Coun Eddie Fisk, is pictured (centre) with former civic heads and council officers.
