BURY'S former British flyweight boxing champion Ady Lewis is back on the title trail next month.

The Mighty Atom is set to take on London-based Ghanaian Francis Ampofo on Monday, March 20 for the vacant Commonwealth bantamweight title given up by Ellesmere Port's Paul Lloyd.

And the venue for the fight, for those who believe in omens, could be a good one for Lewis as the St Andrews Sporting Club, Glasgow is the place where he won the British flyweight title with a win over Scotsman Keith Knox back in January 1997.

"I don't believe in omens," said Lewis's trainer and manager Tara boss Jack Doughty. "It's all about what you do on the night."

"But Ady has been training superbly and is already down to his fighting weight. That's a great situation to be in. "He used to find the stamina training and running over the hills hard but he's begging for more now!

"Francis Ampofo is a great little fighter and is very experienced but Ady's youth will be an advantage.

"He's quite experienced for his age and has been fighting at a high level with a few 12- rounders under his belt so we can only be confident."

As for Lonsdale belt holder Lewis he can't wait for his chance to get back among the title holders after taking the decision to move up to bantamweight.

"I know all about Ampofo and have boxed on his undercard a few times but I think I have what it takes to trouble him," declared 24-year-old Lewis, a keen student of the boxing game.

"He likes to come forward as I do so it should suit my style, I can't wait to get cracking.

"My mum's not happy though, because the venue is men only and she'd miss the fight like she did when I won the British title!"
