ST HELENS Council is warning people to beware of bogus builders posing as authority workmen and selling 'drop crossing' entrances into driveways.
Complaints have been received from Haydock and Newton-le-Willows about the workmen who are charging £130 for jobs which council highway engineers have described as "inadequate and a potential safety hazard."
All council workmen carry identification which should always be asked for. If in doubt, you can also ring customer services on 01744 456470.
Police are now investigating the matter.
Chairman of Highways and Transportation, Councillor Terry Hanley, said: "The council prides itself on the standards of work by its craftsmen and engineers. Obviously there are people who are trying to cash in on this reputation but are then providing a potentially dangerous service. Anyone who is approached by these people should either ring customer services or the police.
