THIS year's Newton and District Town Show has been scrapped. And the group who run it have disbanded. They blame a lack of public support.
The decision was taken by the seven remaining members of the Town Show Committee after the resignation of chairman, Joyce Thompson.
Joyce, who has been chairing the committee for the past 20 years, told the Star: "It is very sad for me because I have been on the committee for so long but my husband died last November and I am moving closer to my daughter in London."
She added: "The decision to dissolve the committee certainly wasn't taken lightly but we couldn't see any alternative. Public support and interest has been dwindling steadily over the last few years and personal circumstances mean our committee membership is also down to a minimum.
"However, the small committee have worked hard through the past years to put on a successful show to entertain the people of Newton and I personally would like to thank them for their commitment."
