POLICE have renewed an appeal for witnesses to a vicious attack on a 22-year-old student.

The victim, who wishes to be identified only as Mel, was left needing plastic surgery after being attacked at about 1.10am on Saturday, February 5, by a man who had been chatting to her in the upstairs bar of the Nexus night club.

The incident occurred when Mel declined the man's offer to go outside. He grabbed her by the back of the head and, as he swung her around, grabbed a glass off the bar and thrust it up into her face.

Mel, who is still suffering from blurred vision, told the Star: "I urge anyone with information to contact the police immediately. It could stop him from doing this to someone else."

And Sergeant Trevor Taylor, of the licensing department at St Helens police station, said: "This was a particularly vicious attack and I appeal to anyone who may know something which could help with our inquiries to contact us. All calls will be treated in strictest confidence."

Mel's attacker is described as white, 5ft 8in to 6ft tall, with a pale complexion, blue eyes and black hair gelled into a slight Elvis-style quiff at the front. He was wearing a grey, short-sleeved shirt with white pinstripes and black trousers.

Anyone able to help police can contact Sgt. Taylor on 0151 777 6830, DS Tommy Wright on 0151 777 6053, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
