LEIGH EAST overcame a dithery first half to defeat East Leeds 16-8.

They missed too many tackles and created too few chances as Leeds edged six points clear; prospects for the second half looked bleak.

But, despite falling another penalty down, East then produced some good stuff with John Gunning at the heart of everything.

He had good support from new No 9 Paul Hayes and MoM Gary Fletcher, the game's top forwards.

East again lost too much ball on the first and second tackle, but good support from Tim Fletcher and sub Lee Penkywicz saw Hayes score the first of his two fine tries. Penkywicz, looking real sharp, dashed in for the try which finally edged East ahead, and seven minutes from time Hayes grabbed the clinching TD.

On Saturday East are at Eccles, while the A Team are at home to third-placed Waterhead.
