RAYMOND Clarke, 76, a member of Lancashire Automobile Club for more than 50 years, has been made an honorary life member in recognition of his work for the club.

Mr Clarke, of White Road, Blackburn, has been a committee member, served as chairman and as president and is now a director and treasurer of the club. He was formerly a deputy manager of the Midland Bank's Church Street branch in Blackburn until he retired in 1984. He is a well known church organist.

At the annual meeting, David Bell, newly installed president said: "It would be difficult to find anybody else connected with motor-sport who has given so many years of continuous service to a single motoring club. The name of Ray Clarke, the Lancashire Automobile Club and the initials LAC are known throughout the sport."

Lancashire Automobile Club will be celebrate its centenary in 2002. It is believed to be the oldest motor-sport club in the country with an unbroken record of activity.
