REGARDING your article (LET, February 15) on what methods could be used to get rid of the unsightly mess of gum on our pavements, many were suggested - except for one.

That is the one used to clean up buildings by sand blasting. I would have thought this is the obvious answer.

As for asking people to change their habits, its worth a try. After all, the nasty habit of spitting has almost been eradicated.

There was a time when housewives would scrub the pavements outside their front doors, believing that cleanliness was next to godliness, but that was many years ago.

It makes one wonder which way we are going in these modern times.
