PLANS to close several nursery schools in East Lancashire and merge others to form "centres of excellence" are likely to be scrapped after a public outcry.

Lancashire County Council was today set to back down from radical plans to create "super nurseries" and merge some other nurseries with nearby primary schools.

Falling pupil numbers and costs brought about the idea from education chiefs at county hall - but an angry response from nursery staff and parents across the county has now forced them into a re-think.

A consultation exercise into the proposals began in January and ended a week ago, leaving officers in no doubt where public feelings lie.

A report which will be presented to county councillors says: "The consultation has generated considerable interest and a significant degree of critical comment."
