FARMERS and landowners across East Lancashire should give written permission to people wanting to search for treasure on their land - warns the Country Landowners' Association.

"The long spell of wet weather can wash up to the surface valuables as well as junk," said Jolyon Dodgson, regional director of the CLA in the North West.

"This makes the end of the harsh weather a popular time for people to be knocking on doors and asking about the use of metal detectors. It is particularly important that any farmer or landowner approached in this way should grant written permission to detect on his land," he said.

Mr Dodgson added that a declared treasure trove remains the property of the Crown, but that the full market value is normally paid to the finder or finders."

CLA members needing advice should contact the regional office on 01524 782209.
