LOVE of opera brought fellow bikers Philip Shuker and Pam Newham together on centre stage.
The image of leather-clad bikers on their mean machines and the rarefied atmosphere of opera music do not fit easily together but the two revved up to star in Pendle Opera's production of Bizet's love story Carmen at Burnley Mechanics Theatre.
Philip, of Helmshore, is the boss of the Bikers' Advice Bureau which gives information and advice to motorbike fanatics across the country, while Pam, of Nelson, is a member of Accrington Motorcycle Club.
Pam played the lead role of Carmen with Joan Horsfield taking the role for two other productions.
"It's a double casting production to give as many members of the cast the opportunity of main roles," explained Philip, chairman of Pendle Opera.
He plays in the chorus throughout the production's four-day run. "I've been chairman for five years and find that role challenging enough," explained Philip.
The pair share another passion apart from opera, motorcycling. Pam, along with husband Jeff, are members of the Manchester-based Bikers' Advice Bureau which Philip, a solicitor, heads.
