A GROUND force style team of volunteers turned out to work on a woodland trail project in Padiham.

The Environment Agency has joined forces with Gawthorpe Environment Movement, Burnley Council and the National Trust to develop a new footpath to be called the Padiham Woodland Trail.

Volunteers of all ages turned up to work on the first stage of the footpath which links Lune Street footbridge with the National Trust's Gawthorpe Hall woodland and the "Gawthorpe fish" tree sculpture created in 1988.

When it is complete the path will improve access routes and improve wildlife habitats in and around the town.

Nick Hepworth of the Environment Agency said: "It's an exciting project and it was great to involve the people of Padiham in something that will benefit their community."

Iris Hitchen, Heidi Barrowclough and Enid Ellis, of Nelson and Colne Soroptimists, are pictured carrying timber.
