A PRESTON Running Club is hosting a race and fun run to raise funds for promising new athletes -- and the local community.
And Preston Harriers are calling on local businesses to sponsor and support the race.
Road runner John Holland said: "We are holding a couple of races to celebrate our new track. One is 10km race and we are also having a 2km fun run for all the family.
"We've joined up with neighbouring Cottam Community Association. Whatever profit we make from the races, we will share with them."
The races take place on May 1 -- Bank Holiday Monday -- and the club wants goodies to put into bags for children who take part in the fun run. The main race, across a variety of terrain around Cottam, starts at 10.30am and the fun run at 10.35am.
John added: "Brewsters have already given us drinks to put in the bags for the kids and the Ancient Oak pub, where we will hold the prize-giving, have donated £100. McDonalds restaurant has also donated some vouchers. We need other things to put in the goodie bags and money to help have the t-shirts printed for the 10K race finishers."
The aim of the race is also to promote athletics to youngsters.
John said: "We are putting a fund together for up-and-coming local star athletes, who find it difficult to get sponsorship."
On race day, coaches will be on hand to talk to any children interested in any aspect of athletics. Any businesses interested in helping should contact John at 25 Straining Avenue, Ashton, or on (01772) 465976.
