BUSY bookworms at St Nicholas CE primary school, Blackpool, are this week's Little Champions.
Pupils at the school got their heads down on World Book Day on March 10 for a sponsored read and raised a superb £700 for the Macmillan Windmill Appeal.
Head teacher Linda Dawes said: "We wanted to do something for the appeal because it is so important for Blackpool and we thought it would be nice to tie it in with World Book Day.
"All the children were keen to take part so we borrowed some extra books from the school library service.
"The children spent an hour reading and then discussed the books with their friends. They all really enjoyed it and were delighted to raise so much money for the appeal." Mrs Dawes added that it was impossible to single out any of the children to receive a Little Champions T-shirt. So we are awarding a T-shirt to each of the seven sensational classes at the school and they will be used as prizes for children who do special things in future.
A SPECIAL thanks this week to everyone who helped push the appeal total past the £250,000 mark before the end of March and so earned a donation for the same figure from Blackpool computer company ITM Communications.
Blackpool Victoria Hospital director of fundraising Ramesh Ghandi gave this message of thanks.
He said: "People have been so generous and it really is a fantastic achievement to reach that figure.
"It was quite tense the day before wondering whether we would reach the target in time but I knew people would rally round and I am very grateful to all of them."
