CLOCK Face lifted the St Helens Combination's Rainford Potteries Cup after a deserved 4-0 victory over a gallant Pilkingtons A team at Ruskin Drive on Saturday.
Paul Eccleston put Clockahead when he bravely headed into the net despite a crunching challenge from the Pilks keeper. The same player then scored the goal of the game, latching on to a fine through ball, his first time drive whipping into the net from 20 yards.
Mid-fielder Gareth Thomas the lashed the ball home from a goal mouth scramble to put Clock 3-0 ahead. But they then dropped down a gear and allowed Pilkingtons to come into the game more, but their scoring chances were few and far apart. Eventually Paul Eccleston claimed his hat-trick with a beautiful left wing lob that left the Pilks keeper grasping air.
The Quarter finals of the D H Griffiths Divisional Cup also took place when, Hospital Cup Finalists, Shoe FC and Carr Mill won through. Shoe, via John Grady and Mike Pinder goals eliminated a gallant Junction FC side 2-1, and Carr Mill had a handsome 4-1 away win at Child Reserves. An Andy North 20-yard special plus another goal, then Gary Ball and Rob Stroud additions putting out one of the favourites. Carl Pilling (2) and Andy Eaton were the target men in Sidac Social 3-2 home win over Pilkington Reserves. The fourth semi-finalists will be Chestnut Lodge whose journey to Haydock proved fruitful with a 2-1 win over Old Congs. Keith Barker scoring the home goal. In league games, St Helens Star Premier Division matches Penlake Juniors (James Creevy, Kev McNabb, Mark Carrig) beat Haresfinch Social 3-2. And East Sutton Labour have to thank Peter Cummings and Kev Leyland for the goals that gave them a 2-0 win over Prescot Leisure Reserves.
In Division Two Green Dragon went down 2-1 at home to Gerard Arms Reserves (Paul Oakes, Philip McMurray). Billinge Reserves scored all the goals in the 3-1 success at Bull and Dog - an own goal being the home team's reply. Abbott (2) and Miller were on target for Broad Oak in a 3-0 beating of Bowling Green and Top Nogs (Jason Fairhurst, Jamie Taggart) had no trouble beating Kendricks Cross 2-0. Division Three favourites, College St Helens beat one time title challengers, Railway Rangers 1-6 thanks to goals by Ed Furlong, Jack Woodcroft (2), Lee Holmes, Carl Bromilow and Neil Ball - Gary Swift replying.
In a very good game at Hoghton Road , the St Helens Combination Open Age outfit fully deserved their 2-0 win over the Blackburn Combination in their final Group One game. Goals came from Gary Ball and Eddie Furlong.
In Sunday Division matches, Rose and Crown dominated the proceedings to slam Sutton Heath Panthers 7-0, but Victoria Rainhill were thumped 4-1 at Owens Corning.
