THE fed up residents of Lowton have called for a stronger police presence in the area.
They were out in force at the last meeting of the Police Community Consultative Group at St Luke's Primary School to complain about youth nuisance around the perimeter of the school buildings and playground.
They asked for more community constables to work the area exclusively, but Det Ch Insp Ian Hilton told them that due to resources and manpower levels this was impossible.
He said parents, teachers and the local authority should and will have to play a larger part in controlling local crime.
A spokesman for the group said: "The views of the public left their mark on the meeting. There was a strong call for law and order and answers to questions.
"Mr Hilton was left in no doubt that the residents of Lowton want a stronger police presence."
Guest speaker at the meeting, Phil Harrison, gave an illustrated talk on the Community Safety Partnership within the borough.
The next meeting is on May 24 in Room 2 at Leigh Town Hall between 1pm to 3pm.
