RAIL users at St Helens Central Station can breathe a sigh of relief -- thanks to the efforts of Merseytravel and St Helens Councillor, John Mealor.
The toilets at the station in Shaw Street had been closed as a result of constant vandalism and anti-social behaviour, denying commuters the chance to use the facility.
But rail operator First North Western has decided to re-open the toilets after lobbying by Councillor Mealor.
He said: "I had complaints that it was difficult, or impossible to get a key to these important facilities in times of need. This is no joking matter, particularly for the elderly."
Denise Brown of First North Western commented: "John Mealor highlighted the problem and has helped us focus on a package of measures that will bring considerable effort to frustrated St Helens Central customers. In the short term we are ensuring the toilets will be accessible on demand, protecting the rights of passengers. We are also planning a package of works which will create a more secure, comfortable and accessible facility for the future.
