TRANSPORT police have named the man who died when he was hit by an express train as it sped through Leyland on Sunday night.

Malcolm James Fleming, believed to be in his early 40s, was on the railway track close to the junction of Bent Lane and Turpin Green Lane when the accident happened at around 10.15pm.

It is not known why Mr Fleming was on the track when the accident happened but police have said the driver of the express train, travelling to Manchester, saw him a split-second before the collision, but could do nothing to avert the tragedy.

Ambulance crews were called to the scene, but Mr Fleming was found to have suffered fatal injuries.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: "The driver said he saw the man before impact, but there was nothing he could do.

"We are not treating his death as suspicious and a full inquiry is now in progress. A report will be submitted to the coroner."
