Radcliffe Boro...1
Workington...0
WITH the promotion race building to an exciting climax, the three points were vital.
And just when it seemed Boro were to be denied, up popped Ian Lunt with a clinical finish to calm the nerves.
Boro found the sodden pitch more to their liking than Flixton's bumpy surface on Saturday and they turned in a performance, particularly in the second half, which eventually swept away the Cumbrians.
The first half started with Boro pushing forward, but when the breakthrough didn't come, despite both Paul Mullin and Lunt going close, the front two became increasingly isolated and Workington began to take the game to Boro.
Fortunately, they lacked a finishing touch and Berryman was never really troubled throughout the half.
The second period saw Boro in the ascendancy. Mullin hit keeper Hoggeth with one shot with the goal at his mercy within a minute of the restart.
Mullin continued to cause the visitors defence problems but it wasn't to be his night.
Several times his efforts failed to bring the breakthrough and when he cracked a shot against the crossbar after 61 minutes it seemed Boro were doomed to a night of frustration.
However, the ball fell to Lunt on the edge of the penalty area and his fine control and low drive into the bottom corner was the reward the anxious specatators and players craved. Boro continued to push forward in search of a second goal, but Workington never gave up. They continued to play football and, on two occasions, Berryman was called upon to make full length saves.
As time ran out Mullin was still plugging away, but it was not going to be his night.
However, the points had been secured by that precious Ian Lunt strike.
