THE decision of Barclays Bank, which made profits of £1.9billion last year, to close 171 branches in the small, more-rural areas is another example of big business riding roughshod over the needs of the community.
They say: "A big world needs a big bank" -- more like a big chairman gets a very big salary.
Branches were advised to keep the move cloaked in secrecy for as long as they could and keep the customers happy. Their argument is, the world is changing with more phone and Internet transactions coming along, but how far could you go without cash in your pocket? Not far, I believe.
Many businesses only deal in cash. People may have to spend hours and pay more to use alternative branches.
Many MPs have spoken out against the closures. Maybe it's up to Barclays' customers to speak with their feet and change banks in protest.
