A HUGE cash boost of almost £2.5 million will mean repairs and improvements can be made in Bury's most needy schools.

The £2,452, 095 handout is part of the Government's New Deal for Schools programme and will benefit 49 local primary and secondary schools.

Included in the 53 individual schemes are new classrooms, repairs to roofs, the replacement of heating systems, new windows and window frames, updated electrics and resurfaced playgrounds and floors.

Bury's school standards spokesman, Coun Andrea Hughes, said: "The amount is certainly beyond our wildest expectations. The money will make a lasting difference to primary and secondary schools in every single township of this borough."

Elton High School has received the biggest share with £385,000 to spend on four replacement classrooms, upgraded pupils' toilets and improved and extended dining facilities. Headteacher Mr Neil Scruton said: "We are absolutely thrilled to bits and can't wait for the work to begin. It is urgently needed and we are very grateful."

On the primary school front Radcliffe's Cams Lane has scooped the highest amount. Its £235,000 will be used to extend, alter and improve its buildings.

Headteacher Mr Gerald Ashforth commented: "I've not come down off the ceiling yet. This is a massive boost for the school and a brilliant way to celebrate our silver jubilee!. An Ofsted report for the school in September stressed that lack of teaching space was a key issue. Now this can be addressed."

Bury North MP David Chaytor added: "It's especially heartening that Bury Council has had its bid met in full."
