PENDLE housing boss John Kirk has been criticised over outspoken remarks about Burnley's housing stock transfer.

He told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph that massive pay awards to the newly-appointed bosses of Burnley and Padiham Housing were a betrayal of tenants.

He also warned that future tenants would have to pay through the nose and that it would be the children of present tenants who would end up paying the price.

Burnley's chief executive Roger Ellis, told the full council that Pendle's chief executive Stephen Barnes had phoned him to apologise on behalf of his council for the quotes in the article.

Coun John Harbour commented: "It was out of order what the officer has said."

He said every Burnley councillor and the tenants were aware of the 20 per cent increase in rents for new tenants when the transfer was voted through.

Coun Harry Brooks, however, said: "I would like to assure him that no apology is necessary. His remarks were entirely appropriate."
