A TEENAGE girl was punched to the ground and robbed in a savage attack in Burnley early today.
The 19-year-old was walking home from a friend's house at 3.10am when she was attacked from behind.
She was struck on the back of the head and punched in the face several times.
As she collapsed to the floor, the attacker reached inside her coat and stole a blue, black and white wallet-type purse containing what police described as a small amount of money.
After her attacker ran off, the girl went home and was then taken to Burnley General Hospital for treatment.
Detective Sergeant Mark Goodchild said: "We will be interviewing her again today to get more information about the incident.
"It was a serious incident. She received bruising to her face and is obviously badly shaken and distraught by what happened."
The victim was not aware of the man until she felt the first blow.
He is described as white and in his early twenties. He was wearing dark clothing.
Police are appealing for anyone with information to ring Burnley CID on 01282 425001 or contact Crimestoppers in anonymity on 0800 555111.
