A LEIGH junior school given a bad report by government inspectors six months ago has been turned around in record time.

Westleigh Methodist Primary has been taken off special measures - and a new Ofsted inspection report commends the school as having outstanding features.

Inspector Marilyn Cooke has congratulated the school on the amazing progress made in the last six months.

She said it had made more progress than any other she has worked with in such a short time.

And acting headteacher, Gill Burrow, and chair of the governors, Kath Hilton, are thrilled.

Mrs Burrow, who moved from Atherton St Philip's at the end of September, said: "I feel very proud of the school and all that we have achieved since the end of September.

"It is a pleasure to lead such a hard working and dedicated team.

"We have a loving, caring atmosphere in school where children want to give of their best and do well." Mrs Hilton said: "The speed with which the school has come off special measures is a tribute to the teamwork of the staff in very difficult circumstances.

"We would like to thank the LEA and the Leigh Education Action Zone for their continued support. Children and staff are buzzing and are determined to build on these strengths for a progressive and forward looking school. We are delighted.

The new report said the school provides a good quality education for all its 120 children and 60 nursery children.

The high standard in early years and infants has been continued, and the dramatic improvement in the juniors has ensured that there are now high standards throughout the school.

The good leadership and management of the school have ensured quality teaching and an environment where children are stimulated, involved and motivated to succeed.

There is a vibrant and sparkling atmosphere about the school, with quality displays, which pay tribute to academic achievement, and are a testament to the pride that the children have in their work.

The variety of extra curricular activities and educational visits enhance the broad and balanced curriculum provided by the school.
