KHALID JHUGROO is set for some tough England training in Canada. The Tyldesley SC youngster will attend his third England training camp over Easter at Crystal Palace. He then jets out to Edmonton for a 10-day trip with the England Youth Squad. The climax of his time in Canada will be the 22nd annual Edmonton Keyano International, facing competition from top swimmers from throughout the world.
Khalid and Kelly Banner have, meanwhile, been in record-breaking form at the Lancashire Age Groups. Khalid slashed five seconds off the junior best to win the 1500 freestyle (NQT), claiming both junior and senior championship titles. And Kelly hits two bests, in the 15-Year ladies 200 IM and her age group 200 IM.
National qualifying times were achieved by several swimmers: Richard Hampson in the 200 freestyle (1st), 200 and 100 butterfly (both 2nds), brother Matthew in the 200 IM (1st), 100 breaststroke (2nd), 400 IM (3rd) and 200 butterfly (4th); Leanne Watmough, who won the 16-Year 100 breaststroke and was third in the 200 breaststroke, Jessica Howarth and Kate Ward. Good swims too from Stuart Carlisle, Nicholas Parry, Samantha Thompson, Sarah Wood and Sean Peers. Matthew Kearns, 12, and Stephen Cottam, 13, both took part in their first long course competition, each producing PBs.
At the B&D Championships Tyldesley swimmers Jessica Howarth, Kelly Banner and Stuart Carlisle collected a selection of trophies. Jessica won the ladies 200 IM and 100 butterfly to claim the senior and junior trophies in both events. And Kelly (ladies 100 backstroke) and Stuart (gents 100 backstroke) both secured senior and junior trophies; Stuart was also second in the gents 100 butterfly.
Back in the league Tyldesley juniors lost 56-47 at Stretford; in a Junior Jubilee they were second on 134 ahead of Chadderton (94) but behind Trafford Metros (148). The seniors beat Ashton (38-2) and Stalybridge (36-4), but the intermediates lost 181-136 to Ramsbottom. In the semi of the Age Group Knockout Urmston beat them 53-40.
