A TEENAGER came close to death after thugs stamped on his head, leaving footprints on his face.
David Miller (17) from Breightment, was attacked on Friday night (April 7) in the Red Bank Road area of Radcliffe.
Police have photographed the footprints on David's face and hope they could be used as evidence in the hunt for his attackers.
Four people have already been arrested and released on police bail pending further inquiries.
David was set upon by a group of up to ten older youths in a street. They kicked him unconscious as he lay helpless on the ground.
He had been visiting a friend in Radcliffe when the attack happened. The gang set about David, kicking and stamping on him. He was left bleeding on the street.
He was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital but later transferred to intensive care at Blackburn's Royal Infirmary and then a general ward.
His condition was critical, but is improving all the time although doctors say it is still too early to gauge the extent of damage from his head injuries.
His father, Mr Ian Miller, said: "He has footprints on his head and on his back and has bruises everywhere. He is slowly coming round and has become restless. He seems to know who we are."
He added: "He goes to his mate's on a Friday night to stay over after he's finished work. We still don't know what happened. He is a very popular boy. He would not harm anybody.
"He would do anything to help. My friend's granddaughter dotes on him. He just wouldn't have looked for a fight."
His parents say only his devotion to keeping fit with weights and sport had saved his life.
Detective Sergeant Lynne Vernon said: "I would call these people animals but animals would not do that sort of thing.
"It's a meaningless attack which defies explanation.
"It was vicious and malicious to leave him lying there in that state."
Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information should call 0161 856 8212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
