A NEW service for the disabled has wiped out the waiting list for wheelchairs.

Wigan and Leigh Health services NHS Trust's new equipment centre has virtually cleared out a 32 week wait for its 7,000 patients.

The Kirkhall Lane, Leigh, base was officially opened on Monday by Minister for the Disabled and MP for Barnsley, Margaret Hodge (centre).

The achievement comes just weeks after the "Fully Equipped" report was published by the Audit Commission, highlighting a poor service generally in the area of wheelchair and mobility aid provision.

Wheelchair supplies for Wigan and Leigh residents were provided by Withington Hospital in Manchester, until the Trust took over two years ago.

Rita Chapman, Trust general manager for the rehabilitation and elderly care directorate, said: "The service has been completely turned around. There used to be a basic 32 week wait for wheelchairs, but now there is practically no wait at all.

"The new centre will allow us to further improve the service in purpose built accommodation.
