ONE man died and mercy crews were still searching the wreckage for another after a head-on collision between a Longridge tanker and a car early today.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene and the search was continuing for the body of a second man believed to be trapped under the tanker.

Two other men were taken to hospital with serious injuries after the accident in Broughton involving a Vauxhall Nova and the HGV belonging to a Longridge firm.

The crash happened at around 3am in Whittingham Lane, Broughton, close to the M6.

Police said the Nova, carrying the four men, was cut in half after it was in collision with the tanker belonging to TDG Nexus, of Longridge.

Firefighters were also called out to put out a small blaze. The driver of the tanker, which was carrying polythene pellets, escaped with minor injuries.

Whittingham Lane was expected to remain closed for most of today while debris was cleared.
