CHRIS WADDLE has taken on a couple of new roles and made a successful start in each.

The former Burnley boss has been promoted to assistant to caretaker manager Peter Shreeves at Sheffield Wednesday.

Waddle steps up from reserve team boss after Frank Burrows was forced to take leave because of a serious illness to his wife.

And Waddle enjoyed a winning start as the Owls beat Wimbledon on Tuesday night to keep alive their slim chances of beating the drop from the Premiership.

On a less serious note, the 38-year-old former England international has started playing again -- in Sunday league football.

Waddle and neighbour David Hirst, the ex-Sheffield Wednesday striker who recently had to retire from the fulll-time game because of injury, have been signed up by Meadowhall League side Brunswear Athletic.

The duo have helped the team, based close to their homes in Dore, near Sheffield, climb the table with 26 goals in their last four games.

Waddle has contributed five, including a trademark free-kick. BURNLEY'S League Championship-winning team of 1959/60 will re-assemble next month to mark the 40th-anniversary of the Clarets' title success.

The full side is expected to attend the special celebration dinner at Turf Moor on Saturday, May 13.

And other big names from the club's history are also expected to be there as organisers Ex-Clarets in Sport have invited all former players.

Celebrity fans such as Alistair Campbell, Sir Bernard Ingham, John Kettley and Eric Knowles have also been invited to the evening which will be compered by Mike King with current reserve team boss and ex-player Mick Docherty among the speakers.

There are just 60 tickets remaining on sale which are available by contacting Alison Armfield on 01282 459424 in the evening. LEGENDARY Burnley manager Harry Potts earned a place in the top 50 greatest British managers' poll run by Total Football magazine.

Potts, who delivered the League Championship to Turf Moor in 1960, was placed 35th in the all-time list which was topped by Bob Paisley.

"Gave the Clarets their vintage years," said the magazine.

ANDY Payton and Glen Little both earned a place in Opta's Second Division team-of-the-week for their performances against Notts County last Saturday.

Not surprisingly, County keeper Darren Ward also got in after pulling off 11 saves and conceding just twice against a barrage of Burnley efforts.
