ELASTICA
Manchester University WITH a new album and line-up, Elastica are back on the road.
Half the crowd who packed into the hall would have gone home happy, regardless of how singer Justine Frischman and company performed on the night.
Their punky, power-pop style produced a string of hit singles during the Britpop era and few in the crowd needed convincing that Elastica still had something to offer. Even during the surprisingly sloppy parts of the show -- most notably Justine forgetting the words to Vaseline as she brought the main part of the set to a close -- the crowd remained forgiving.
Returning for the encore, Justine and keyboard player MEW bravely tackled the new album's standout track My Sex. With the duo reading lyrics from notebooks through distorted microphones before launching into the trashy punk chorus, it fell well short of the recorded version.
But the band soon redeemed themselves with a powerful rendition of Generator before closing with old favourite Connection.
