A LIFELINE for older people in Burnley and Pendle is in jeopardy because of a chronic shortage of volunteers, say organisers Age Concern Lancashire.
The Caring Neighbourhood Scheme allows for one volunteer to visit a pensioner once a week for a chat, cup of tea or sometimes a short walk.
Age Concern says it also provides a focus for older people and can help maintain independence and quality of life.
But local scheme organiser Jan Johnson says that the project is now running at a low level because of the lack of volunteers and many people are not receiving the service.
She said: "We would like to hear from people who have a couple of hours a week to spare to provide some warmth and friendship into an older person's life."
