RESIDENTS turned out in force to clear rubbish from the River Darwen at Hoghton Bottoms.
Residents teamed up with the Darwen River Valley Initiative to organise the clean-up, part of the Tidy Britain Group's National Spring Clean event. They were helped by the 46th Scout Group, Hoghton Women's Institute, Chorley Ramblers, the De Hoghton estate, Hoghton Parish Council and Chorley Borough Council.
Sarah Lester, Darwen River Valley Initiative co-ordinator, said: "The River Darwen at Hoghton looks untidy because the banks are strewn with litter.
"Water quality within the catchment has improved in recent years but litter continues to spoil the natural beauty of the river. Everyone can help to reduce litter problems by putting litter in the bin so that it is not blown by the wind into hedgerows and rivers. We can all improve the environment by putting our litter where it should be -- in the bin."
