A CHILD will be killed on the stretch of road outside Accrington Town Hall unless speeds are cut, according to the chairman of the Hyndburn police and community forum.
And Maurice Cowell, former mayor and Labour Party candidate at next month's local elections, wants the CCTV cameras which cover Accrington town centre to be used as evidence to help prosecute drivers who illegally use the road, which is for buses only.
He has called for signs to be put up at Eagle Street and Church St banning heavy goods vehicles from entering that stretch of Blackburn Road.
He said: "It is a five mile an hour area, but I see vehicles going at least 20 miles an hour.
"It is an accident waiting to happen. If a child runs away from a parent there will be a fatality.
"I don't want a child going under the wheels of a bus and I don't want to see any injuries or a fatality.
"I want the CCTV cameras to be used to stop the misuse of the pedestrian area outside the town hall and anywhere in Hyndburn."
"He added: "Taxis and heavy goods vehicles are using the road as well as buses.
"Identification needs to be upgraded at the Eagle Street and Church Street sides that large vehicles should not approach."
