A STRETCH of the River Darwen is looking a lot tidier thanks to a weekend of hard work by environmentally-minded volunteers.
Oil drums, polystyrene packaging, sanitary waste and plastic products were all lifted out of the river at Hoghton Bottoms by more than 20 volunteers -- who now plan to go back to the river over Easter to finish the job.
It is the third time the Hoghton Bottoms stretch has been hit by the Darwen River Valley Initiative.
Carol Price, who organised the clean-up said: "We were amazed at what we pulled out of the water.
"We even found half a moped."
She added: "The river is looking a lot better now. We were very impressed with the fact the river wasn't as bad as last year, but there is still too much rubbish being dumped there."
