JEWELLERY: Greater Manchester Police launched an appeal to trace the owners of approximately £100,000 worth of jewellery and other valuable items which were recovered from the Manchester area.
The property was believed to have been taken in smash-and-grab raids, by shoplifting and by break-ins at various houses in any part of the country.
LES: There were smiles all round when Unsworth comedian Les Dawson presented three trophies and some 100 medals to pupils of the Davies School of Dancing.
The awards were presented at Sunny Bank and Unsworth Community Centre where Mr Dawson's father was a member of the school.
CARS: Greater Manchester County Council was accused of taking a "big brother" attitude by forcing Bury and neighbouring town's to charge for parking. The GMC proposal would mean motorists having to pay 40p a day to park in Bury centre.
BEDS: The daily charge for a private bed at Bury General Hospital was £26.80.
TRAINS: Local rail commuters who used the Bury to Manchester train service faced another hammering from the increased passenger fares announced by British Rail.
The fare rises, of an average of 15 percent, were the second of the year and meant a weekly season ticket from Bury to the city centre would go up from £2.45 to £2.85. A monthly ticket would cost £10.90 (from £9.20) and a three-monthly ticket would cost £30.90 (£25.80).
New priced for a single ticket was 26p (24p). Day returns increased by 4p to 52p and a day return off-peak rose from 27p to 38p.
GOODIES: There was to be plenty of monkey business expect on Granada TV's new pop series, Shang A Lang.
Crazy comedy trio The Goodies, alias Bill Oddie, Graeme Garden and Tim Brooke-Taylor, were the special guests of the Bay City Rollers and were to perform their chart smash, "Do The Funky Gibbon".
FOR SALE: A detached house in Brandlesholme, built in 1967 and complete with five bedrooms, was on the market and a snip at £16,600.
