HERE'S an unusual poser which has sprung to the mind of senior citizen Bernard Platt.
He wants to know if anyone can confirm that Matt Creevey, the St Helens leaping legend, once jumped across the double locks, at the Forsters section of the St Helens
canal, in a single mighty bound.
Matt, an old-time publican, was well-known for such challenges during the 1920s, and was reputed, among other things, to be able to leap on to the back of a Shire horse in a standing jump.
He was also said to be so light on his feet that he could jump on and off a crate of eggs, in the flicker of an eyelid, without breaking any of the shells.
His great rival for leaping fame locally was Tom Colquitt of Parr, credited with a host of national records, many for jumping with weights in his hands.
Like Bernard, who originates from Parr Mount but now lives in Cedar Close, Whiston, I'm curious to know more.
Can anyone kindly fill in some of the details? If so, I'd appreciate a line or two on the subject (and, for that matter, about any other sporting giants from the town's past).
THE address to write to is: Whalley's World, St Helens Star, YMCA Buildings, Duke Street, St Helens WA10 2HZ.
