A GANG of youths are believed to be behind a string of racist crimes in the Broadgate area of Preston.
The mob, all aged 16-20, has been blamed for a catalogue of racist threats and taunts, leaving many Asian families in fear of violence and intimidation.
They have also been accused of vandalism and house break-ins in the area.
Now police have stepped up patrols in an attempt to curb their activities and ease racial tension.
Sergeant Paul Wilson, of Preston police, confirmed that police are investigating these incidents, using undercover surveillance and a highly visible police presence.
He said: "We are assessing the situation. The officers involved believe that most of the gang's activities are racially aggravated.
"We are working closely with other agencies, such as the local Neighbourhood Watch and local councillor Elaine Abbot to see what can be done."
He added: "The problem is made worse by inadequate street lighting in the area.
Coun Abbot said: "This gang is getting worse. Residents are telling me of all sorts of incidents, including vandalism, petty theft, and racial abuse.
"People should not have to put up with it. Something needs to be done -- and quick."
