ROAD humps have been altered on three East Lancashire roads -- so new disabled-friendly buses can travel down them!
The roads make up part of the new 'Quality Bus Route' being drawn up for Hyndburn, using the route of the existing Hyndburn circular.
Part of the plan for the quality route is the introduction of new low-floor buses which make it easier for disabled people and parents with prams get on to buses.
But before the buses can get on to the road, speed humps on three roads have had to be modified to make sure the hi-tech vehicles can complete their route.
The width of humps on Barnes Street, Clayton-le-Moors, was extended so the incline was less steep, while the humps on Thwaites Road, Oswaldtwistle, and Winter Road, Knuzden, have been reduced in height from 100mm to 75mm. A spokesman for Lancashire County Council, which is working in co-operation with Hyndburn Borough Council on the project, said: "We have had to modify the humps on three roads.
"The problem occurred when we realised that the humps were too steep for these buses, because their floors are so low."
He added: "The quality bus routes are designed to promote public transport, providing state-of-the-art buses on quick and efficient services."
As low-floor buses become more common on the country's roads, it is estimated some £30 million will have to be spent correcting the speed humps -- or ditching them all together.
A spokesman for Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council said: "It isn't an issue for us at the moment because we have no low-floor buses running in the area although we will address the issue if it arises."
