THE GMB- Britain's general union is readying itself to fight for improved conditions for telephone workers throughout the UK.
The union says call centres are turning into "the new sweat shops of Britain."
There are many tens of thousands of people employed in call centres. The working hours are often long, unsociable and the GMB has even heard of cases where employees are not allowed to use lavatories without asking permission. Telephone operatives are constantly monitored whilst taking a call and by CCTV.
Conditions have been compared to those of textile factories in the Far East.
