POLICE are appealing for any information that could lead to the identification of the body of a premature baby which was found in a local churchyard.
The skeletal remains of the baby were found buried in the grounds of Holy Trinity Church, Bolton-le-Sands.
An inquest into the death has recorded an open verdict and police say they are keeping an open mind about the death.
They have appealed for anyone with information to come forward and have promised to treat any information sympathetically.
The body was found buried under two foot of earth in a black plastic bag. It had a small plastic umbilical clip and is thought to have been seven to eight weeks premature.
Police believe the baby's body had been buried in the churchyard for more than a year.
