THE Willowbrook Hospice received a pat on the back at this year's Civic Trust Awards, one of the UK's leading awards schemes for architecture and environmental design.
The hospice, which is funded by charitable donations and local collections and was opened in 1997, received a mention in this year's list of awards.
The Civic Trust considered the design of the hospice to be imaginative and sympathetic with a light and airy interior which allows patients to enjoy the tranquil view of the gardens, but is sensitive to their need for privacy.
The Trust was particularly impressed by the way the building fitted into the surrounding landscape.
This is the second time a building in St Helens has received a special mention. In 1998 the conversion of the Mansion House in Victoria Park for Age Concern was praised.
The Civic Trust Awards have been established for 40 years and are given to outstanding examples of new architecture, restorations, town planning, landscapes and public art which benefit local communities and environments.
