DOG owners could soon fall foul of the law after the council has introduced fines for pooches who poop on the promenade.
Owners could be hounded with fines of up to £1000 if they fail to clean up after their pets thanks to new powers introduced by the council last year.
It now makes it possible for wardens to administer on the spot fines to offending owners throughout the borough, which can then be enforced with court action.
With work on the promenade now nearing completion, the council want to make sure they keep the area clean.
The council's attention was drawn to the area after numerous complaints about the state of the paths that run along the promenade between South Pier and Starrgate. This comes just one week after the council's "Don't leave it, clean it!" campaign which was sparked by a ten year old boy.
As reported last week in The Citizen, Chris Topping, a pupil at Claremont Primary School wrote to to council to complain about the state of his local park.
The response was to put up new signs and install clean-up bins and now the "Clean it!" logo will be on signs and bins to be installed along the promenade.
Blackpool's head of environmental services, Kevin Garritty said that these actions were needed to stop the selfish actions of some people.
"The irresponsible actions of some dog owners who cause a major nuisance has led to this crackdown which could result in on the spot fines for some people.
"We are determined to keep this walkway clean and attractive and our wardens will be out in force to warn people about the consequences of not disposing of dog dirt properly."
Offenders can be hit with an on the spot fine of £25 and failure to pay can lead to court prosecution and a £1,000 fine.
