A FESTIVAL trip to Scotland gave teenage four-piece Cambuslang their offbeat name -- and the band hope to be playing the great outdoors at a battle of the bands in Blackburn on Monday.
Cambuslang take their influences from bands like Blur, Belle and Sebastian, and others have compared their sound to bands like Portishead. Their music ranges from raging rock to rhythmic, folk-like moments like their song Don't Let Your Tea Go Cold. The band consists of songwriting duo Jon West, from Great Harwood, and Ryan Lofthouse, from Darwen, lead singer Laura Holden, from Darwen, and Bury sixth-former Sofia Martyn on drums. They formed at Easter 1999 and completed their current line-up in December. They took their unusual name from a small town outside Glasgow which Ryan and Jon spotted on the way to the T In The Park festival last summer.
Jon thinks simplicity is the key to the band's sound, although they are no open book, as their anthem-like song You're So Complicated suggests. He said: "We keep it simple and that reflects the influence of classic performers who have influenced the band. We prefer the voice and guitar combination rather than doing anything too fancy. We're growing in confidence and getting quite a following."
Cambuslang are one of three bands taking part in a Bank Holiday battle of the bands on Monday at the Cellar Bar in Blackburn.
And the all-day event, set to kick off with DJs at about midday, should take place outdoors if the weather is fine.
Hip-hop and metal band LBJ, Preston rockers Chevron, Burnley indie act Pretend Girlfriend and Cambuslang are set to battle it out during the evening.
The winners will get a chance to spend 12 hours recording at Shamrock Studios in Balderstone.
Cambuslang hook up with Pendle rockers Earl for a gig at the Cellar Bar, Blackburn, on Saturday, May 6.
