CROWDS of people flocked to Towneley Park yesterday to join in the St George's Day celebrations and to take advantage of the sunny weather.

Organisers of the event estimated they had 10, 000 visitors throughout the day and are hoping to make it a two-day event next year and would like to find an even bigger field to hold it in.

Attractions included fairground rides and stalls, motorbike racing for children, demonstrations and stalls by Lancashire Fire and Rescue and the Queen's Lancashire Regiment, as well as charity stalls for Burnley and Pendle Hospice, Only Foals and Horses, Burnley Dog Rescue and Burnley Play Association.

Burnley and Pendle's Miniature Railway Society attended and Burnley Dog rescue also gave dog displays during the day. Members of the public were also given the opportunity to race remote control cars provided by West Craven Model Car Club.

Mark Robinson, one of three organisers, said: "It's gone really well and all the stall holders have said they have had a good day.

"The weather stayed really nice for us and we have had quite a few people asking us to make it a two-day event which we are thinking about.

"We are now looking for people to help us organise the next one."

Money raised at the event will be split between Burnley Dog Rescue and Burnley and Pendle Hospice, who will be presented with cheques on Wednesday.
