HUDDERSFIELD Town left back Jamie Vincent could be a surprise summer transfer target for Blackburn Rovers boss Graeme Souness, who also took the opportunity to spy on Bolton striker Eidur Gudjohnsen and several other players on Saturday, writes Peter White.

Souness missed his own team's goalless draw at Grimsby to take in the Huddersfield-Bolton clash at the McAlpine Stadium.

And, desperate to improve his team's goalscoring potential after a bitterly disappointing season for all four senior strikers, Souness confirmed his transfer priority was to find a solution to that particular problem.

Rovers are also understood to be keen to try to tempt Bolton to consider taking back one or two of their 'old boys' such as Nathan Blake or Per Frandsen, neither of whom have hit it off since their big-money moves to Ewood.

That might be a key to any possible moves for Gudjohnsen. But, according to sources in Yorkshire, they have also regularly checked on Vincent, signed from Bournemouth just over a year ago for a basic £200,000 which could rise to £555,000.

And Souness will be looking to strengthen his squad in other positions, as well as up front.

Vincent has been a regular for Huddersfield, playing in both an orthodox back four and as a wing back with three central defenders.

"I was just checking out players and there were three or four I wanted to look at in that game. That's all, there is nothing imminent," said Souness.

Gudjohnsen is also thought to be on the wanted list of Premiership clubs and, in any case, his future could depend on what happens to Bolton at the end of this season with regard to the play-offs.

Derby left back Tony Dorigo has also been the subject of speculation as a possible target.

Dorigo, who played for Souness during the manager's short stint with Torino, is out of contract at Derby at the end of the season but does not feature on any of Souness's shopping lists.

Meanwhile, Blake and Jason McAteer were rated very doubtful for this afternoon's game against a Charlton side already promoted to the Premiership.

Blake was substituted at Grimsby with Achilles tendon problems and was the more doubtful of the two.

McAteer took a couple of heavy challenges, with a painful knock on the shin, and did well to continue as long as he did.

Charlton, promoted after Ipswich's defeat at QPR, now have the championship in their sights.

But Tony Parkes, in charge of the side during the manager's absence, said that Rovers wanted to end on a high note with the all-important thing to prepare for next season.

"We want to end with a flourish but we need to concentrate on getting the troops together for next year, starting in August," said Parkes.

"It's vital to try and get a better start and get up the league early on."

Parkes, quizzed about Souness's spying trip, admitted that the club were looking to strengthen their scoring resources, especially in view of their efforts this season.

But he also pointed out that they were looking at other positions too.

"It's been a season where we haven't scored many goals," he said.

"Lee Carsley has been our leading goalscorer with 10 and he has missed a lot of games as well. So that's a department we would be looking to strengthen, that's for sure.

"It's no secret we haven't scored enough goals.

"The manager obviously wants to strengthen the squad and it would be silly to leave it and then start again next season.

"We want to be up and running from day one with the squad we want to give it a go."
