FIVE Blackburn-based Indian organisations have joined forces to raise money to help more than 50 million people affected by a severe drought in the western states of Gujarat and Rajasthan.
The Indian Muslim Consultation Forum, India League, Blackburn Hindu Centre, Indian Workers Association, and the Blackburn Muslim Relief Fund are working together to organise a fund-raising event to help the crisis, and will hold an emergency meeting this week.
Lord Adam Patel, president of the Indian Workers' Association, is also backing the campaign by appealing to various groups, including 66 mosques in Lancashire, Blackburn Partnerships, Blackburn with Darwen Council, as well as voluntary organisations for their support.
He said: "My family and friends do not live in that area, but whenever drought takes place and wherever there is human suffering, there is a crisis.
"Some parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan have no water whatsoever. The majority of the population is very poor, and the consequences will be disastrous if they don't receive help in time."
Anyone who would like to offer their support should contact Imtiaz Patel, secretary for the Indian Muslim Consultation Forum on 01254 693664.
